Finding Your Art Niche

Finding Your Art Niche

Struggling to find your art niche? Don't be too concerned - it's a common dilemma for many artists. So don't throw your paintbrushes away just yet.

Have you had enough of the "Hey, just experiment, it will eventually come to you" kind of advice for discovering your niche? I don't blame you. It can feel like you are going round and round in circles for the most part.

Well if you want my opinion (wink)…

A lot of finding your art niche lies within self-assessment. What that ultimately means is… your ability to search within yourself and bring out who you really are onto the canvas. Yeah, I realise that all sounds good in words, but how do you actually go about doing that…I hear you ask.

What Is Your View On Life?

Just consider how you view and interpret things in life. What are you most familiar with, and most of all… what fascinates you the most?

For example, I love to paint portraits because I am slightly obsessed with the whole idea behind human characteristics. What I see is the fight against physical deterioration and the struggle for preservation in people.

I guess it all came about by looking at myself in the mirror. Let's face it, we all do the whole "Oh, did I just age 5 years last night?" thing from time to time. We are human; we are very much pre-occupied with vanity.

That is why we are prone to self-admiration as well. You know…like with a little bit of, "Hey, good looking" when we look in the mirror (wink).

But my point is…I get a lot of inspiration from human characteristics. We are all quite different to look at, and this is something I am passionate about trying to portray on the canvas.

What Are You Passionately Fascinated By?

One way of finding your niche is to really try to discover what fascinates you the most as this is what you will be passionate about the most… and as a result; become more familiar with as you progress on your creative journey.

To truly discover your niche, your voice or your calling as an artist… you have to get at the very core of who you are and what it is that you want to do.

What area of your life creates unusual excitement or the most compelling emotion in you?

Go back and sit next to the 10 year old kid you once were. Ask him or her…I can almost guarantee that he or she will know.

Taking Action

When you know what your calling is…and when you know what your art niche is, then manifest that emotion into passion and then into action.

Importantly…try to be patient. Keep asking yourself "productive" questions and take note of what captures your attention the most.

Pssst… keep an open mind.

What My Visitors Say:

"I have been dragging my feet about getting back into my art for too long. Carl thank you for your No BS answers to my frustrations. I have to admit I didn't really expect to hear anything when I filled out the survey, but when I got a personal letter from you I was blown away. Thanks again"

"Thank you so much for your personal reply. EVERYTHING you said really struck a chord and I guess on some level I already knew all the answers. You have motivated me beyond anything I have ever read, been told or taught before..."

"
Your advice has been very good... especially the part about vision and practice"

"Carl, Thank you for that thoughtful reply. I printed it out and at first look I didn't see that it was a personal response. That was the most direct honest wise interpretation of my dilemma that I have ever had the pleasure of reading..."

"What you said has really got me excited. Thanks so much for the reply (and at 4 in the morning too!) I am really going to work hard at starting where I left off so long ago..."
