Using the
online video networks to promote your art is a great way to
generate some publicity as an artist.
Video
networks like YouTube.com and Viddler.com (there are many more) are great
places to use as promotional tools, providing you use them to
contribute and provide some good content.
I do not know
how many videos I have watched where the artist has put together
a slide show of their work and simply uploaded it as a video
onto their YouTube channel.
There is
nothing wrong with making slide shows of your art for video. But
I am surprised that many artists do not contribute more in
their video – like say even a personal welcome at the beginning and a
brief explanation as to who they are and how they go about doing
what they do.
Content
Is King
Promoting and
selling art online is no different than bringing attention to
any other type of business. There is a process that needs to be
taken into consideration.
The idea is
to try and build relationships - and to do that you MUST create
content.
Content is
king.
So when it
comes to making videos of your self and your art, create content
so people can appreciate who you are. You don’t have to be
serious – you don't have to try and be funny. You don't even
have to get personal - just be your self.
I like to
keep three factors in mind when I make videos to promote my
work:
I try to make
my videos
either to intrigue, inform and/or inspire my viewer. But most
importantly… I use video as a communication tool.
I'm not the
greatest of filmmakers, but I have a lot of fun putting my
videos together. My videos have been a helpful contributor in
bringing people to visit my site; some have even bought my work.
Promote Your
Art and Connect With People
Here's a tip
for you...
If your
videos can support the curiosity your visitor has in you and
your work, you will lead them (naturally) to coming back time
and time again to watch more of your videos.
It will also get them talking about you to their
friends
("Hey Margaret, go check out Billy-Bob's art video…)
The point is
that networks like YouTube and Viddler are Social Media portals.
They are an online meeting place. So the key is to focus
on building relationships with your viewers. This could
well lead them to one day buying a piece of you work.
"But…
What Do I Talk About?"
Like I said
before, all you have to do is simply be yourself.
One of my favourite artists on YouTube is Tony.
In Tony's videos you see him painting, dancing, drinking his
home made wine and talking to other artists in his community.
In fact a lot
of his video background music tracks are from the live
recordings he captured from local bands.
Sometimes his videos have nothing
to do with art -
he'll film a giant bug that has landed in his pool. Kooky? Yeah,
but my point is that he keeps it all really simple and it's
often quite funny. He uses no fancy stuff, just real people
doing their thing.
But it is always interesting enough for me to want to go
back and watch more of his new videos as they are uploaded.
So the big
tip is here is; you don't have to come up with anything
elaborate in order to successfully promote your art with video. You don't have to be anything you are not.
The best
place to start is to create a running dialogue of who you are
and what you are up to as an artist.
Consider
things like...
What you love
the most. What frustrates you the most? Tell your potential
"fan" how you came to be and where you are going.
You don't
need to show them your baby photos... you just need to bring
forth the content that supports your art.
So when it
comes to using networks like YouTube to promote your art... start
by simply TALKING.
Don't over analysis what it is you want to do or say - it will kill the
spontaneity. Just go with whatever inspires you.
Go Forth and
Create!
Here is your
goal for the month to promote your art with video...
If you have
never posted a video on the internet before, and you don't feel
comfortable talking in front of a camera then simply do this…
Go film
yourself working (painting, sculpting etc). Add some images of
other pieces you have created then simply add have some running
dialogue over the top. You can even write down what you want to
say so you won't feel as though you are babbling.
Then go post
your video on You Tube.
Will it bring
you sales? Probably and probably not, but it will get you OUT of
your comfort zone and creating content that supports your art.
If you know
how to TALK about your art then you are naturally informing your
potential buyer without trying to sell.
Create
content and you will create a gathering.
Create
content and EXCITE your suspect (wink).
