Personality Publicity

As artists,
we all want good publicity. A good starting point is to ensure
that we have a good personality.
It has always
been my belief that all the marketing in the world won't make up
for a lack of personality. In other words, most of us artists
have to go out and do a lot of self-promotion. So in order to
increase your public persona as an artist, you need to increase your
general like for the public.
Yeah sure,
not all of us are social creatures. We don't have to be. But we
need to make sure that what we believe in and how we represent
what we do is consistent with our personality.
There is no
bigger billboard for promoting your art than yourself.
I know of
artists who are not public people. They simply do not like any
attention and are not really confident in dealing with the
public. In this kind of situation I always advise people to
focus more on talking about the other person.
What do I
mean by the other person?
It means to
quite simply try and express genuine interest in other
people. Inquire
about the person you are talking to. Find out more about them
than they will find out about you. It's not because you have anything
to hide. It's simply a great way to remove most of the attention off
you – which kind of suits the shy personality type.
Sometimes being passively receptive to people can really give your
popularity a positive jolt.
Say for example someone comments on your work
in a positive way; your ability to reward them for their comments
through your personality can often bring them closer to you and
your work. This is something I have managed to do quite well –
without even realising it.
Being
passively responsive is quite effective, because at the end of
the day, most people like talking about themselves. If you are
passively responsive to people talking about themselves you will
become quite popular very quickly.
It's funny
how people often say, "Gee, John sure is such a fantastic
fellow," and yet John hardly spoke a word.
John sure did a lot
of listening though – and he sure asked a lot of questions
about the person he was talking to. That’s why the guy John
was talking to (or rather wasn't talking to) felt that John was
such a fantastic fellow. John simply let the other guy talk
about himself.
Popularity
Through Word Of Mouth
We have all
heard that "word of mouth" is one of the most powerful
marketing tools that exists. When people enjoy what you do and
truly like who you are, they are often quick to tell other
people within their circle of influence.
We generally
trust and value the opinions of our friends and family members.
As a result, we quite often follow up on their recommendations
without hesitation. So my point is; people's opinions of you
will compound and as a result reach to not just one circle of
influence... but many.
So throw a
little personality into your self promotion – it really is a major
contributing factor when it comes to good marketing. It's free
too!
