Self Portrait
My name is Glenda Freeman. I am a self taught artist. I was born in Chonburi, Thailand on November 17, 1971.
As I reflect upon my life, I think about the paths that have led me to my career as an artist.
It began at the age of twelve on a Sunday drive with my father.
He asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I replied, “an artist,” he stated, “you better find another job.”
Not because he did not believe in me and my talent, but because he knew that the path is long and arduous.
Throughout the years I deferred my dream of becoming an artist and worked numerous jobs; a waitress, a soldier, office manager and many more in between, but feeling incomplete.
I met my mother when I was 19 years old.
Meeting her brought on a new path of self-discovery, which later influenced my way life and my art.
My mother introduced me to Buddhism, and from that point on I embarked on a new journey. As the years passed I joined the army and was married and divorced.
Coming out of an abusive marriage and loosing myself brought me back to square one - finding myself.
I began to dig deep within my soul by studying Buddhism and painting; and in doing so, it has helped me overcome depression.
While my journey has caused me much heartache and pain I feel complete.
I have discovered that art is not just a part of me it is who I am, art is the window to my soul.
Although my career as an artist was deferred earlier in life, I understand the deferment is what has helped to shape my art and me.
