"Self Discovery" Acrylic On Canvas

by Glenda Freeman
(United States)

Self Portrait

Self Portrait

My name is Glenda Freeman. I am a self taught artist. I was born in Chonburi, Thailand on November 17, 1971.

As I reflect upon my life, I think about the paths that have led me to my career as an artist.

It began at the age of twelve on a Sunday drive with my father.

He asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I replied, “an artist,” he stated, “you better find another job.”

Not because he did not believe in me and my talent, but because he knew that the path is long and arduous.

Throughout the years I deferred my dream of becoming an artist and worked numerous jobs; a waitress, a soldier, office manager and many more in between, but feeling incomplete.

I met my mother when I was 19 years old.

Meeting her brought on a new path of self-discovery, which later influenced my way life and my art.

My mother introduced me to Buddhism, and from that point on I embarked on a new journey. As the years passed I joined the army and was married and divorced.

Coming out of an abusive marriage and loosing myself brought me back to square one - finding myself.

I began to dig deep within my soul by studying Buddhism and painting; and in doing so, it has helped me overcome depression.

While my journey has caused me much heartache and pain I feel complete.

I have discovered that art is not just a part of me it is who I am, art is the window to my soul.

Although my career as an artist was deferred earlier in life, I understand the deferment is what has helped to shape my art and me.

Thank you for sharing your great story Glenda.

What I really liked about your story is how art pulled you back, out of necessity. It's unfortunate you had to experience the hardships you did, but your story seems to reiterate how some things happen for a reason.

It's no wonder your art is quite powerful to look at. I can only guess, because I have only seen photographs, that people truly feel the energy of your work when standing directly in front of it.

Your message is inspiring, and I hope that a lot of people get to appreciate you and your work. Thank you

Carl
