Sell Your Art Work With Confidence

How To Be Confident Selling Your Art

One of the biggest problems for an artist, in the beginning, is building that confidence in their work.

I personally battled to see my art as worthy enough for public viewing in the early days. I really struggled to visualise somebody actually hanging a piece of my artwork on their wall.

The biggest fear for most artists is the fear of public scrutiny.

What are people going to think?

Will they like it… will they hate it?

This is a valid fear.

As an artist; in order to sell your art work, it requires you to put your whole self out there in the public arena. It's not always a nice environment, but in order to sell your art work, you do actually have to…expose it and show it off.

Sell Your Art Work, Not Your Concerns

It's impossible to sell a secret. And that's all your art will ever be if you keep it stored away in a dark room in your home – a secret.

I actually gave up being an artist for a few years. It wasn't until I woke up and realised that I had done so simply to avoid the fear of public opinion.

Silly huh?

That's what happens when your ego is in control. The ego tends to over protect us.

But I gained quite a few theoretical and practical tips that helped to boost my confidence and break through the resistance to create and sell my work.

If you are struggling to see your art as worthy enough for sale, then there are a few factors you may want to consider.

Firstly, check the quality of work you are producing.

Ask yourself… "Is what I am producing really connecting with me? Am I not pushing myself to explore and discover what colour, texture and presence I want in my work? Is my work too translucent and lacking depth? Should I try doing a bit more preparation work like sketches and mapping out my composition to make the best use of my canvas?"

But most importantly, ask yourself this…"Am I really passionate about what I am producing?"

It's not hard to see an artist who is passionate about what she does because it will show in her work. This passion is what will ultimately connect with the buying public. If people can connect to your passion and identify with your work, that's when people are more inclined to dig into their pockets and buy some of your work.

If you are truly passionate about your work, then you'll be able to stand in front of your art with confidence. Confidence will do you wonders and really help you sell your art work.

There is nothing wrong with looking at your work from an objective viewpoint. It's a healthy attitude to have. But if you are overly critical all the time, then you have a problem.

If your heart is really into your art, then let me tell you something you need to remember and hang to… you are good enough!

Your art is good enough.

Yes, your art will always be evolving.

Yes you will learn and develop technique and style and progress as an artist.

But if your heart is truly guiding you in your work, then your work is good enough.

Let me give you a few tips you need to concentrate on:

  • When exhibiting your work, present it with confidence. If you hide at the back of your exhibit booth because you lack confidence in discussing your work, people won't be inclined to buy. You need to guide people through your work. Doing that shows you have an element of pride (modest) in your work.

  • Keep working on your technique. If you have doubts about your art being good enough from a technique point of view, then keep working. I can assure you; you will break through and eventually discover your true voice on the canvas. It's a gratifying moment too!

  • Do not consume yourself with concerns about what people think of your art. It will unman you right from the beginning. Yes you will get criticism; it is simply an industry that caters to people with opinions. But remember…how you think about what is going on is more important that what is actually going on.
